The Premier Soccer League CEO, Brand de Villiers has announced that the Absa Premiership Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs scheduled for 1 November has been postponed.

This follows a request by Orlando Pirates for a postponement in the wake of the death of club and Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa. Meyiwa was shot dead on 26 october at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus in what is suspected to have been a armed robbery.

De Villiers said they had received a request from Orlando Pirates for the postponement of the Soweto derby. The request has been granted by the league, said De Villiers, who also took the opportunity to once again send the league and football fraternity’s condolences to the Orlando Pirates family and Meyiwa’s family during this difficult and tragic moment.

Other Absa Premiership fixtures scheduled for the weekend will go ahead as planned. Bobby Malabie, group executive for marketing, communications, citizenship and public affairs at Barclays Africa Group, said, “As title sponsor of the Absa Premiership, Absa fully supports the league’s decision to postpone the Soweto in the light of the death of Meyiwa. Absa will continue to offer any support we can during this difficult time.”

A new date for this fixture will be announced by the league in due course.
