Laxton completes 83rd Spar Challenge

ILLOVO - The evergreen Sonja Laxton ran and completed her 83rd 10km Spar Women’s Challenge.

South Africa’s most successful runners of all time, Laxton also designed the course which she said, considering the time in which the first runner came in, she was very pleased with.

Speaking to The Gazette after crossing the finish line, Laxton said she designed a long gradual flat race course and after running it, it was quite harder than what she had anticipated.

She also commended Spar for a well-organised event saying traffic was very well controlled.

Last year, she completed her 80th Spar race when she won the Grandmasters category in Johannesburg.

A few weeks later she was struck by a car while training, and suffered multiple fractures.

While there were those who thought she might never run again, Laxton had other ideas, and less than six months later, she ran in the Port Elizabeth Challenge, finishing in 57.12 minutes – a time that would put most women of her age to shame.

Her finishing time was just over 51minutes.
