Intense action at varsity netball tournament

JOBURG - Seven rounds of intense netball action were held on 6 October at UJ's Soweto campus.

Out of eight competing universities, only four top teams made it through. The University of Pretoria (Tuks), North-West University (NWU), University of the Free State (Kovsies) and Stellenbosch University (Maties) all won their respective matches and will be vying for top position at the semi-finals to be held on 13 October .

Maties produced a clinical performance to hosts UJ, a 61-39 Varsity Netball defeat in Soweto.

They will face log-leaders Tuks in their semi-final next week. It was the last match of the tournament for UJ who finished in sixth position.

Maties had an encouraging start to the game as they took control early on and went into the first break with a 17-8 lead. They extended that advantage further in the second quarter to go into the half-time break with a healthy 33-17 advantage.

Maties wrapped up the bonus point early in the fourth quarter and cruised to a comfortable victory in the end which will give them plenty of confidence heading into their semi-final next week.

Defending Varsity Netball champions Kovsies were ruthless as they handed Vaal University of Technology (VUT) a resounding 77-16 defeat in Soweto today.

Tuks continued their unbeaten run with a comfortable 79-13 win against University of Cape Town (UCT) ensuring they end top of the Varsity Netball standings heading into the play-offs.
