KFC mini-cricket tour off to a successful start

ILLOVO - With the likes of renowned Proteas players such as Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Graeme Smith and Neil Mackenzie, the launch of the KFC mini-cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour was a success.

The launch took place at the Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Illovo and featured a friendly match between the Proteas and the KFC mini-cricket players.

Lizanne Bartlett, marketing director for KFC South Africa, explained the reason for the fast food giant’s involvement in the programme.

“KFC’s involvement is linked to the idea of getting young children more involved in sports and off the couch, and also to make them more active,” she said.

She added that the programme was open to every child in the country and was aimed at taking cricket to impoverished and well-off areas in the country.

Additionally, the tour saw the launch of the KFC mini-cricket competition. “Three winners will be selected, with the first prize winners getting an exciting opportunity to play with their school team against the Proteas at a live curtain raiser to the KFC T20 International Series against West Indies in January 2015,” she said.

She added that the three winners would be selected from Durban, Cape Town and Gauteng.

Also present at the launch was Niels Momberg, youth and tertiary cricket manager for Cricket SA.

“This initiative is Cricket SA’s way of introducing the sport to young children and showing them the basics [which will] hopefully encourage them to one day play for the Proteas,” he said.

“Of course, we hope to grow the programme even more and have over 16 000 schools involved by 2025.”
