Old Eds mini hockey a resounding success

HOUGHTON - Mini hockey was reintroduced to the Old Edwardians club this season and throughout the winter the number of children participating saw a steady growth.

The mini hockey players were able to take part in four festivals in three age groups, with the final one at Khosa Festival in Krugersdorp on 16 August.

Despite the rain and cold the players finished the season on a high.

The U5 boys and girls combined team showed just how their skills had improved and developed.

According to Mike Dunk, communications officer for Old Eds, the children had shown consistency in their ball skills and passing, and had formed some sort of understanding among themselves at the festivals.

This resulted in them producing their best results with two wins and a solitary loss. Dunk said the U9 boys team had grown in stature, skills and sportsmanship, and a few key combinations had developed which resulted in their best results at the Khosa Festival.

“They won their first three matches, including coming from behind to down Pirates 2-1, but they lost to one of the best teams in this age group and their hosts, Khosa,” he said. “This team has shown maturity and character beyond their years.”

The U11 group finished the season with yet another really good performance.

Dunk pointed out that although the team was missing a number of boys, the U11 team still showed character and fight.

“As no one was available to come off the bench, the boys seemed to enjoy the luxury of knowing that they would not be replaced. Some played out of position, but this will only allow them to grow into the game in the future. They beat Pirates and Benoni Northerns, drew with Khosa, but lost to team Shumba,” he added.

Dunk said the resuscitation of mini hockey had been an overwhelming success. “We are privileged to have so many coaches of quality who are willing to assist, together with the parents who act as taxi drivers, that the results have exceeded our expectations.

“This all augurs well for the future of both mini hockey and in the future, senior hockey at Old Eds,” said Dunk.
