Few upsets are expected when the University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosts the second leg of the highly charged varsity athletics on April 14 at the Westdene UJ Stadium.

“If the competitiveness shown at this year’s first event which took place at Nelson Mandela Metro University in Port Elizabeth is anything to go by, we can expect a titanic battle in Johannesburg as some of South Africa’s top athletes battle it out for both individual and team honours,” said Varsity Sports CEO Duitser Bosman at a press conference.

Bosman said the athletes who will grace the track and field facilities at Westdene UJ Stadium , during the Varsity Sports athletics programme stand to win between R40 000 and R50 000 in prize money.

“From the Varsity Sports point of view, it is not the money at stake but the biggest motivator will be the individual and team bragging rights that will propel our athletes to their utmost come Monday. This will be the excitement of US College Sports – South African style,” he quiped.

Bosman urged the public and parents of the students to come and watch as they strive for a new personal best or perhaps a new record and victory for themselves or their team.
