Old Eds squash team start with a win over Randburg

The Old Eds mens 1st squash team could not have wished for a more positive start to their league campaign when they beat Randburg 12-5 in their opening match.

The Old Eds men’s 1st squash team could not have wished for a more positive start to their league campaign when they beat Randburg 12-5 in their opening match.

The only loss was suffered by Old Eds’ Jason Cole-Niven who was nursing a hamstring strain. He lost to Randburg’s Garren Kent.

It left the remaining three players some graft to do, but they responded magnificently. First Christo Potgieter, playing at number one, beat the wily campaigner Mike Toothill in three straight games. He proved to be too strong and too fast for Toothill.

The turning point of the match came when Old Eds’ Wesley Daniels managed to recover in his game against Derek van der Merwe who raced into an early lead with some dominant play. Daniels levelled at 2-2, and following some sage advice from his team-mates he proved to be too strong in the final game to edge home 3-2.

Xander Robinson put the icing on the cake as he won a tight first game 13-11 against Randburg’s Shaun Mackenzie, but from then on was just too powerful and won the match 3-0 to give Old Eds the win.

A good start to the season for Old Eds, but with stronger opposition to come, this confidence booster will augur well for the rest of the season.
