Bowls star shines

Illovo – The prestigious bowling South African Masters Singles Tournament was held at The Wonderers Club in Illovo on 14-16 February, where local resident Noah Mabula participated.

Mabula was one of only two Johannesburg Bowling Association players under the age of 25 to be selected by Bowls South Africa to play in the annual tournament.

Mabula, who lives in Greenside and plays his bowls at Pirates Bowling Club, has been bowling since he was just 14 years old.

He was selected as one of 12 men under the age of 25 throughout the country to play in the once-a-year tournament. “I didn’t play as well as I could have because the greens were very fast and I couldn’t get the right weight,” he commented.

Last year he was invited to a Bowls South Africa training camp; he subsequently received a call-up to the Proteas U25 silver squad.

Mabula is looking forward to play in the Bowls South Africa National Singles championship, as he made it through to the last 16 competitors in the District Singles tournament. “This year my aim is to… win the qualifying rounds.”

Winners in the men’s and women’s open were Nick Rusling and Tracy-Lee Botha; senior men and women: Theuns Fraser and Ellie van Coller; junior men and women: Darryn Stephen and Jacqui J v Rensburg.
