OJ Eagles retain water polo title

HOUGHTON – The OJ Eagles, who have dominated Gauteng water polo for several years, retained their national club title at the Old Edwardian water polo club championships held at King Edward VII School.

The team beat St Stithian’s old boys, Crusaders in the final, while the University of Cape Town team placed third and the Old Eds A team fourth.

Old Eds’ Mike Dunk said, “It was a surprise to see the host team in fourth place as, historically, they always faced the Eagles in the final. But with Old Eds having lost some of their top players, they were under strength compared with the previous few years.”

The women’s section was won by Silvertree, who beat Maties in the final, with the University of Cape Town and Varsity College teams filling third and fourth places respectively.

“The championships once again featured some of the top players in the country, and is rightly referred to as the national club championships due to the quality of the water polo,” said Dunk.
