Old Eds bowls gets new chair

HOUGHTON - The Old Edwardian Bowls Club has a new chairperson: life-long bowls lover Eric Rosen.

HOUGHTON – The Old Edwardian Bowls Club has a new chairperson: life-long bowls lover Eric Rosen.

Rosen comes from a large bowling family, and has been an Old Eds club member since 1980.

“The spirit within the club in those days was fantastic. I couldn’t wait for the weekend so I could get down to the club. It was like a home from home. I would love to rekindle that atmosphere,” he said.

According to club spokesperson Mike Dunk, Rosen’s parents Ollie and Rockie are honorary life members of the club, and it was through them that Rosen’s love of the game was nurtured.

“Bowls soon took over from his love of tennis and cricket, which he played after leaving Parktown Boys’ High School,” said Dunk.

Rosen was secretary at the Allenby Bowls Club, and was also an Italian Club committee member.

Dunk said Rosen will take over as chairperson with some challenges ahead.

“With the Jewish Guild Melrose Bowls Club members joining Old Eds, following the closure of their own facility, Rosen has the task of ensuring their integration into the culture of an old boys club is smooth,” he said.

“His passion for the challenges that lie ahead was evident in the way he spoke about the future, and with his background, it appears that our club has found the man equal to those challenges.”
