Riding for the rhino

JOBURG - Following on the success of the Ride the Rhino event in 2011, the organisers have now extended the event to Race the Rhino this year.

The Resolution Health and Zurreal Ride and Race the Rhino mountain bike race will raise awareness of the 668 rhinos that were poached in South Africa last year.

The race is aimed at raising funds for the prevention of rhino poaching and the protection of the highly endangered animals. The event takes place in the beautiful Renosterveld region of the Western Cape on 21 September, with simultaneous races in the Magaliesburg and Hartbeespoort area for those who cannot make it to Cape Town.

This year’s races have attracted marked interest from the cycling community and several celebrities. Among the celebrities will be speedster Gugu Zulu, a racing driver and television presenter, and Letshego Mosoue, a well-known adventure enthusiast.

Each participant in this year’s race will be provided with a plastic rhino horn with a unique barcode linked to one of the rhinos poached last year. Riders are encouraged to attach these horns to their bike or person for the duration of the race in memory of their allocated rhino.
