Wanderers edge Randfontein

ILLOVO - Wanderers Rugby Football Club welcomed Randfontein Rugby Club from the West Rand in Illovo.

The U21s and third XV took to the Kent Park paddock first. The home team’s youngsters were comfortable 31-19 winners after leading 22-5 during halftime, with tries coming from Mitchell Spencer, Grant Prior, Dowayne Fourie, Timothy Bracke and Ricardo Viera, who also slotted three conversions.

The third team was also in fine form, battering Randfontein 29-13 having led 17-6 going into the break. Tries were scored by Mthokozisi Mtholo, Lindi Mngadi, George Mtemerewa, and a brace together with a conversion by captain Grant Wilcox, while Nick Gerber was successful with a single conversion. Man-of-the-match was flanker Kylie Fyvie.

Things did not work out for the U19 side, who received a severe 3-68 hiding from the West Rand side during which Samuel Mathebula scored their only points via a penalty.

After a poor start and down 5-20, the second XV’s second-half surge was not enough as they lost 17-23.

Eightman Peter McConnell bagged two tries and substitute Stuart Prior bagged one, while fullback and captain James Small contributed a solitary conversion.

The Wanderers first team, Chiefs did their Predator Plate aspirations no harm when they beat the visitors 15-7 in a match which produced two yellow cards for each team. Winger Kyle Dutton and centre Clayton Kelly each dotted down for a try, one of which was converted by flyhalf Stu Hill. Hill also added a penalty.

“It was unfortunate that we didn’t score two more tries in the first half due to passing errors which let us down. We dominated both halves of the game,” said Wanderers coach Neil Kalify.

“The full squad played their roles superbly. Our defence was a standout and true brotherhood was evident. We march on and look forward to our next challenge.”
