Wanderers in nailbiters on the West Rand

ILLOVO - Wanderers Rugby Club ventured into the West Rand for their clash with Randfontein Rugby Club.

First up was the U19 team, which was whitewashed 0-31 by the rampant home side. The following clash, the U21s, was a very tight affair as Wanderers lost 5-7. The close nature of results continued with the Wanderers’ third XV on the wrong end of a 7-14 outcome, the points coming from a try by centre Valery Awono Nguone, which was converted by Jeremy Dobrowsky.

Things got much better for the travellers when the second XV won 30-26, before the first XV Chiefs made the trip back home a pleasant win by winning a close contest 34-32.

Scrumhalf Wesley Flanagan scored two tries, while reserve Clayton Kelly and wing Kyle Dutton each scored one. Flyhalf Stu Hill put in a vitally good kicking display, converting all four tries and adding two penalty shots at goal.

“Anybody who has played at Randfontein knows that it isn’t the easiest place to get your five points, but we did just that,” said Wanderers coach Neil Kalify.

“We were brilliant in the first half, but we did however leave a few tries on the table. Our own mistakes allowed them back into the match and with final passes or decisions not sticking, we could have scored a lot more in the second half.”

Four members of Wanderers have been invited to the Golden Lions Rugby Union senior amateur team training squad. They are fullback Richard Aingworth, centre Peter Hemsley, flyhalf Craig Kolerick and flanker Geoff Wood.
