St John’s College rowers win big at the Bedford Regatta in the United Kingdom

JOHANNESBURG – St John's College rowers were crowned the champions at the Bedford Regatta in the UK.

St John’s College is proud of their rowers who came home as champions after taking part in the Bedford Regatta in the United Kingdom.

The regatta is one of the most prestigious rowing competitions and was established in 1853. The competition brings rowers from all around the world to compete on the River Great Ouse in Bedford.

The St John’s College team was made up of Josh Falkov, Sven Solot, Tim Martin and Ronin Cabral with St Mary’s School, Waverley rower Alex Pretorius as the cox.

The spokesperson for the school Jacqui Deeks said the boys had a row over in their first race when Shiplake College failed to show up and they moved on directly to the semi-final.

She added, “In the semi-final, the boys raced favourites Norwich School. Our lads were able to win by two feet on the official verdict.”

The team went on to race against Bedford Modern School in the final. They were crowned champions, winning the race by four feet.

“It was an impressive win and a very big achievement for the boys. This was the first time a boy’s South Africa Schools Rowing Union crew has won at the Bedford Regatta.”
