VIDEO: Irvette van Zyl wins the 10km Spar Women’s Challenge

This isn't the 16th year that Van Zyl has run this race.

Irvette van Zyl clinched a win in the 10km Spar Women’s Challenge again this year, in 34.48.

Van Zyl said it was a tough race and she felt she had a ‘dip’ at the 6km mark and didn’t feel that she would win, but she said to herself, “I really want to win it.”

She added, “There is no race like the Spar race.”

Van Zyl said the race had been a big part of her running career and she has run the race for 16 years.

Second place in the Spar Women’s Challenge went to Kesa Molotsane with an impressive time of 35.07 while her fellow KPMG teammate Nolene Conrad with 36.19.

Conrad said that the race was tougher than previous years following her move from Johannesburg to Cape Town with the difference in altitude affecting her performance. “But I motivated myself to get the third place. Well done to all the ladies,” she said.

Molotsane was crowned the overall winner of the SPAR Grand Prix, which included races in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

The first female finisher in the 5km run was Bernedette Wilson who is 14 years old.

Bernedette Wilson is interviewed by Thabang Kuaho.

Caxton journalists were at the finish line to snap photos of the finishers. Don’t forget to tag yourself in the photos on the Rosebank Killarney Gazette Facebook page.
