OJ Eagles continue to dominate the Old Eds Water Polo Festival

ROSEBANK - The 2016 Old Eds Water Polo Festival proved to be an action-packed weekend.

 

OJ Eagles dominated the men’s section with their 8th win in a row and their 9th victory over the past 10 years.

They reigned supreme throughout the group section phase and met some resistance from Sacs Old Boys from Cape Town in the final which they won 9–5. Sacs scored two early goals before Eagles replied with three – two of which were penalties – before the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles remained ahead throughout, even when Sacs scored two late goals in the last four minutes of the game. Jan Marc de Carvalho of the OJ Eagles was named Player of the Tournament, and best goalkeeper went to Grant Bellmer of Sacs.

In the women’s competition, Jozi took the trophy home. The team, made up mostly of women who played water polo at school together, four of whom went to Rand Park High, swept aside the opposition, winning the final 5–3 against Maties from Stellenbosch. Jessica Bentley of the winning team won the best goalkeeper award and her teammate, Kieran Paley, was voted Player of the Tournament.

Silvertree from Cape Town won the play-off for third place 8–5 against UCT; but were unlucky not to have reached the final as they had beaten Jozi in the group section and only lost to Maties by one goal.
