GCB discusses successes at AGM

JOBURG – The Gauteng Cricket Board reflect on yet another successful calendar year.

The Gauteng Cricket Board hosted its 39th Annual General Meeting in the Long Room at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium.

An overview of the highlights of the year were discussed, including the turnaround of more than R5-million for the cricket franchise which saw a R1.4-million profit as opposed to a budgeted loss of R4-million.

The addition of independent directors, the confirmation of a new strategic plan and the company’s growth in terms of governance were also lauded.

On the field, the performances that stood out were that of the GCB U19 team (3rd consecutive winners of the Coca Cola Khaya Majola U19 Week), the Gauteng Strikers (winners CSA Provincial One-Day Competition) and the bizhub Highveld Lions (Winners Momentum One Day Cup, runners-up in the Sunfoil Series).

The Bidvest Wanderers Stadium also enjoyed an exceptional season where four days of international cricket saw the sold-out signs go up and the Bullring experienced the most spectators since the 2003 ICC World Cup. Significant investments in infrastructure and the establishment of the Business Centre and offices has seen a renewed positioning of the stadium as the ideal event and business destination.

Added to that was the opening of the Wanderers Sports Medical Centre which boasts 12 medical practitioners and a world-class conditioning centre.

These achievements were applauded by members of the board under the leadership of president Thabang Moroe and CEO Greg Fredericks.

Moroe said, “I am humbled by the passion and dedication shown amongst our constituencies and know that without this, we simply cannot achieve greatness.

“The board has renewed its vision to include the bettering of lives of people through cricket and we are firmly set to [do] what is necessary to ensure sustainability, upliftment and excellence.”
