Healthcare workers make a tremendous impact in people’s lives

JOBURG NORTH – My team and I have reported on the work of medical frontline workers throughout the pandemic. Now we pay tribute to them.

Some years ago, I fell off my horse and split my chin.

I don’t recall the pain, or even how many stitches I needed. The memory that sticks with me is how the attending doctor in the hospital tried to convince me that French is the best subject in school.

The example is a frivolous one. But it carries a powerful message: Healthcare workers make a tremendous impact on people’s lives. Often, even beyond medical care.

This has been evident throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the first case was recorded in South Africa, my team and I have reported on the work of medical frontline workers, both here in our northern suburbs and around the country. We’ve witnessed the remarkable sacrifices they’ve made, often going beyond the call of duty, to help those who are ill.

Their efforts have been commendable and, at times, astonishing. Now, in this feature, under the banner of our Caxton Cares initiative, we pay tribute to all of the workers in the medical field for the work they have done – and continue to do – to save lives.

A couple of our Joburg North publications ran a poll on Instagram recently asking whether healthcare workers should be referred to as ‘frontline workers’ or ‘heroes’. The majority of our followers voted for ‘heroes’. We agree.

To all the hero healthcare workers, my team and I thank you for your every effort during this challenging time. We honour you with this feature. And we salute you.
