Motorists, be vigilant on the road

JOBURG – City of Johannesburg Public Safety chairperson and PR councillor Hilton Masera writes to us.

City of Johannesburg Public Safety chairperson and PR councillor Hilton Masera writes:

Recently, two JMPD [Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department] officers lost their lives as a result of motorists’ reckless driving behaviour.

Whilst directing and controlling rush hour traffic, both officers were knocked down.

With deep regret, the officers passed away. We send our heartfelt condolences to their families.

Joburg can be a safer city if all motorists play an active role in being responsible for their behaviour on the city’s roads and, moreover, are accountable for their transgressions.

In the near future, it will take three years to recruit, select, train and appoint JMPD officers, and as this is a lengthy process, losing just one officer is not only an immense loss to a family but also a setback in the City’s continuity and sustainability going forward.

The Section 79 Public Safety Oversight Committee is the legislative arm of Council which holds the City’s Executive to account for departmental plans and expenditure. Oversight visits are conducted to ensure the department delivers on promises made to the residents.

During a recent oversight visit, these two casualties were [noted] with concern, as incidents of this nature are on the rise.

We appeal to motorists to be vigilant, observant and comply with the rules of the road. The Traffic Enforcement Agencies play a pivotal role in safeguarding motorists by enforcing the rules of the roads, therefore, motorists need to play their part in ensuring that officers are protected whilst performing their law enforcement duties.

Let us play our part as motorists in making Joburg safer for all.
