LETTER: Philosophy behind BRT system

Ward 73 councillor Marcelle Ravid writes:

The philosophy behind the BRT system for Johannesburg is a lofty one.

But the present problems on Louis Botha Avenue are not wished away with the hopeful future outcomes.

There are many issues which are very irritating for residents at the moment and solutions could be easily instituted for the relief of the taxpaying public.

For example: traffic law enforcement could be stepped up, directional signage could be improved, the promise of night time construction work could help alleviate congestion and taxi rat-running could be better controlled.

The inadequate right turns to the west and the Osborn intersection must be re-assessed by traffic engineers, and the fence erected in the median for the safety of pedestrians should be rethought so as not to cause a visually conceived divide. Then maybe the citizens of Johannesburg would be more ready to accept the present Joburg administration’s vision for the future.

How it will actually work in reality will be the proof of its success.
