What about ‘Culture Shock’?

Quick confession - I'm that black girl that used to jam to Backstreet Boys and The Sugar Babes in Primary School and some of my favourite artists since then are pop and country music artists.

And yes, now as an adult, I’m that black girl that has the volume at full blast and unashamedly sings and dances along to Justin Bieber, Ellie Golding, the Goo Goo Dolls, Maroon 5 and Michael Lowman.

However, before a week ago, I had surprisingly never been to a rock or pop event with live band performances.

So, I was very excited when I was invited to the album launch of South African boy band Shortstraw in Baseline in Newtown.

Arriving at the venue, it was very clear that the band was a popular one as the ticket lines were longer than what I had expected [another confession – I had not heard of the band before I received the invite].

Having not ever been to a rock concert or live performance before, I wasn’t really too sure what to expect. Just to make things even more interesting, I dragged along my cousin who at full blast only listens to Gospel music and RnB so this was bound to be one for the books.

I read up a bit on ‘How to survive your very first rock concert’, but Google wasn’t much help. The advice I found was more about what to do to avoid being trampled on by a drunk crowd or being robbed at a rock concert, which made me a little nervous.

But this was definitely not the case, I was pleasantly surprised and had one of the best nights ever.

It’s not every concert that allows the audience to see the performers as close as we’d like and usually the audience is separated by how much you’re willing to fork out for a ticket, but not at this concert.

For the same amount, everyone could either sit on the stands that allowed for full view of the stage or go as close to the stage as they wished.

The music was full of energy and the performances from the opening band, Go Barefoot, to the much anticipated main performance were of incredibly high standards, all encouraging their audience to dance and sing along as loud as we could.

Talk about culture pleasantries.
