Letter to editor: Courts letting police down

Concerned citizen writes:

Letter in response to article “Murder in Homes”

Following your recent article, Murders in Homes, week ending 23 October, I wish to express my deepest concerns.

Some 16 months ago my 83-year-old mother was attacked in her home in Parkhurst.

She suffered severe blows to the head inflicted with a garden spade. Thanks to alert citizens, her life has been spared.

She now lives an existence in a frail care centre and has no quality of life at all, the intruder was apprehended and put behind bars.

The point I want to make is that with all the fine work the police are doing, the courts and correctional services are letting them down.

The accused in my mothers case was out on bail, and apparently he had eight previous convictions against him.

He was awaiting trial for two other cases as well as my mothers assault, his fingerprints correspond to three different names.

On trial date, the courts heard that he was left behind in prison and didn’t make it to court.

The case was remanded to the next day, and on that day the court was told that the accused had escaped over a month ago and was still at large.

All this sick specimen knows, is to attack the elderly for financial gain. Leaving them for dead if need be, can the courts not see this?
