Letter to the editor: Thank you Headway Gauteng

Tsepho Boikanyo writes:

I experienced a severe traumatic brain injury as a result of a car accident in September 2009.

Due to the severity of the head injury, I required intense therapy and rehabilitation. It was during this time my family needed support and it was recommended we explore Headway and what it offered.

Headway is a welfare organisation started by concerned individuals and parties to help people with head injuries and strokes.

It gives support programmes and information about brain injury for the individual and their family, and further assists families to deal with the severity of a person’s injury.

Headway provides services which help attendees through counselling and support.

There is group therapy and activity programme organised regularly as well as awareness and information available.

I have diligently attended every Wednesday for the past two years and it has been very beneficial.

I participate in speech, psych, art/drawing, biokenetics, occupational therapy and interest groups.

The groups are pleasant for interaction with other attendees.

We also share ideas under the guidance of therapists and volunteers.

Going to Headway has improved my acceptance of my situation.

Meeting others who have gone through similar or worse situations has made me feel better.

I look forward to going to Headway once a week for interaction and the experiences of other people who have brain injuries.

It keeps me busy as I always have to think about and prepare for the activities.

I like that the therapy is interesting.

Headway is assisting many others who have sustained brain injuries.

The therapy and positive environment has been beneficial to me. I am thankful for the help I have received from Headway and look forward to progressing and improving.
