BLOG: Live and Let Lee

JOBURG - I’ve always thought, going out and discovering what Joburg has to offer may just be one of the most interesting things a person with a budget too low to actually travel anywhere else – my kind of budget – can do.

I do think there probably are way too many restaurants, clubs, markets and sports clubs in Joburg for one person to visit, but it would be interesting to try.

Having moved from the East Rand to the Caxton Joburg North offices just a year ago, has been an experience all on its own and since then I have probably had more firsts than I have my entire lifetime.

So I have decided to put myself out there, do more things out of my comfort zone, try out new places and in the process document my experiences for those who may want to also experience Joburg and don’t know where to begin or where to go.

Last time I felt out of my comfort zone was seven years ago on a Monday night (a school night) when I went to Alexandra at 10pm and partied until 3am the next morning. That was probably the most fun I had had as a student.

What made no sense to me though was how was it possible that on a Monday night, more than 1 000 people were gathered on this one street where one house provided the music while women from the community had cooked mogodu (tripe), mantwana (chicken feet), skopo (a sheep’s head) and braai’d di kilane (giblets) and selling them on the side of the road.

It was strange but I didn’t mind because the atmosphere was nothing like this dangerous place I had thought Alexandra was.

When anyone says Soweto, I think Vilakazi Street, Orlando Stadium, the Soweto towers and tourists. What else does Soweto have to offer? Time to find out.

Parkhurst is known for its pavement café lifestyle, but I have not fully experienced the culture that everyone always goes on about.

Rosebank is known for its nightlife, but I have no interest in clubbing so my mission would be to find something in the area that’s unlike the rest.

The only stage play I’ve seen was more than 10 years ago with Meshack Mavuso and Rapula Seiphemo, and as much as I enjoyed the experience, I think I was just too young to appreciate the art. But I feel far too many people, including myself are missing out when it comes to the arts.

Craft, food and spice markets… I always hear and read about them, but have never been to either one. It wouldn’t hurt to try.

Live and let Lee is about a young journalist who is ready to step out of her comfort zone, try new things and experience the world – really just Joburg for now – like she never has before.

“But wait… A criteria…” I thought, “I need a criteria for how I would choose what to try and where to go.”

  1.  Only try and blog about activities or a places I have never tried before;
  2.  No franchise unless there’s only four or less branches in South Africa in total;
  3. I will pay for all my meals, drinks and experiences so as to not accept invitations and not be swayed;

I will try one thing every weekend and share my experience with the readers every Tuesday on www.citybuzz.co.za

Follow me on @lesego_puso and I will keep you updated about what I’m trying and where I’m going next.
