Letter to the editor: Campaign criticism futile

Heather Batchelor writes:

This letter is in response to the Editor’s note published week ending 3 June.

I was really enraged to read your futile criticism of Joburg schoolchildren and the #BringBackTheGirls campaign, and what more to criticise them and then to put photos of two pupils under the article as if they are personally under attack.

There is freedom of speech in this country and if the children want to show their solidarity they should be allowed to.

If you thought it was self-indulgent in the first place why did you publish the article in your newspaper? It does not make sense.

For your information these pupils are all actively involved in community services at their schools, and have to complete a certain number of hours per annum as part of their school curriculum.

Ask any of these schools for the total amount of community service hours carried out by one of their grades per annum and you will very surprised.

They are helping people and making a difference.

Before you start pointing fingers at these children, please make sure that you are properly informed.

As the editor of a community newspaper I find your attitude towards pupils appalling and discouraging.
