Don’t lose that Madiba magic

JOBURG - It is nice to see that each year more and more residents stay in Johannesburg over the festive season.

A few years ago, Joburg used to turn into a ghost town over December and the unlucky few who stayed behind had nothing to do and nowhere to go. How things have changed over the years… Joburg has become an exciting place to be over Christmas and residents have a variety of events to choose from.

While some opt to stay due to budget constraints, the fact remains – Joburg Rocks!

Some say Joburg is one of those places you either love or hate – there is no in-between. Well, I don’t understand why anyone would hate such a beautiful community. Yes, Joburg has an ugly side, but the benefits of living in the city far outweigh the positives.

When the news of Nelson Mandela’s death broke, residents from around Johannesburg united in their tears, their memories of Mandela and their passion for their country. The love people have shown one another over the past few weeks is something many cities strive for but rarely achieve. Mandela has, even in his death, united a community. Our community has become so close – this is something we need to try hold onto.

Many people say Joburg residents are unfriendly and do not have a community spirit – Congratulations Joburg, we sure did prove them wrong. The love and community spirit Joburg residents have shown since Madiba’s death is living proof that his legacy will last.

As businesses start closing and neighbours start packing for their well-deserved break, please remember the strength this community has and when January comes, lets not get caught up in our lives too quickly. Please continue to smile at your neighbour, the petrol attendant and the beggar on the side of the road. Let’s not let the closeness of our community dissipate when the new year arrives.
