Jan Smuts Avenue needs to be widened

Apart from the now laudable action on the part of the Johannesburg Roads Agency to resurface the roads in this city, a more critical issue remains: the status of all roads to absorb the huge increase in traffic.

The situation in Jan Smuts Avenue connecting Rosebank to Hyde Park is reaching dangerous proportions. The capacity of a road of single lanes north/south and vice versa is being tested, as it has now become a three to four-lane situation, creating a very stressful motoring experience. And I have to reluctantly use this road on a daily basis.

This is not helped by the reckless driving of the ‘taxi clan’, especially doing a flip at the Bompas intersection, where a right-hand turn is resolved by pushing into the law abiding motorists’ lane, heading north.

How do we as motorists convince the Johannesburg Roads Agency to widen this section of Jan Smuts Avenue, thus providing a stress-free experience for us, the poor motorists?
