Young theatre performers at Greenside High scoop awards

Greenside High School participated in three major theatre performance competitions. These competitions are the Festival for Excellence in Dramatic Arts (FEDA), Edenvale Amateur Drama Society’s (EADS) One Act Plays Festival, and The National Eisteddfod Academy.

Grade 8 and 9 Afrikaans educator, Leandi van Zyl explained that FEDA’s objective is to provide a safe and celebratory platform for young artists and theatre makers to produce, direct and create cutting-edge theatre.

The competition dates were as follows;

• The National Eisteddfod Academy May 22
• FEDA performances May 24 – 25
• EADS performances May 26
• EADS Awards June 3
• FEDA Awards June 4

EADS nominations included the following productions;

• BBB with directors Bianca Dladla and Thandiswa Mlilo; was nominated for best costumes, best sound, best lighting, best original script, and best ensemble.
• After Us, directed by Tlotlo Olifant and Nyeleti Marhanele; was nominated for best sound, best lighting and best ensemble. They won the trophy for best ensemble and best lighting by Hope Lusembo.

For the FEDA nominations, Greenside High School was rated in the top 15 of all participating schools.

The following productions were nominated:

• Inxeba Lomphilisi – Wound of a Healer with directors Naledi Ledwaba, Zinhle Mkhize and Asakundwi Mulaudzi was nominated for best costumes, best production design, best sound by Asakundwi Mulaudzi and best make-up by Imaan Ismail.
• Antigone Repertoire was nominated for best make-up by Ongama Machumela and best lighting by Hope Lusembo.
• After Us was nominated for best make-up and won the trophy for best choreography. The Brett Golden Award for the most inspirational production/ and or performer was awarded to Sashni Thuneshwari Naidoo and Tshiamo Moeng for their heart-wrenching performance of Two sisters in a twilight zone.

National Eisteddfod Academy
Inxeba Lomphilisi and Antigone Repertoire were awarded gold certificates and BBB and After Us won the highest honours with diplomas.

“Greenside High is well known for their innovative and groundbreaking theatre and these results once again prove their prowess in the artistic domain,” said van Zyl.
