“The growth of basketball in Africa is remarkable,” Lual said. “It’s more than just a sport; it’s a way of connecting people – on the court, through fashion, and in shared moments with friends. I’ve seen how basketball has united people, not just in my country, but across the continent.”

Nyuat’s journey is a testament to the evolving landscape of African basketball. Having played for teams across the continent, he has witnessed the increasing enthusiasm for the sport. In South Sudan, football may be dominant, but basketball is rapidly gaining popularity, with more young athletes aspiring to succeed in leagues such as the NBA or WNBA.

“Basketball has brought so many people together in South Sudan. The sport has unified different tribes and allowed young people to believe they can achieve something great, just like the athletes we watch in the NBA.”

His inspiration came from Giannis Antetokounmpo, the NBA star whose journey echoed Nyuat’s. “Giannis’ story is incredible. His upbringing and the struggles he faced resonate with me. He’s shown that with determination, anything is possible, and that’s something I carry with me every day.”

The Lite Star Showdown celebrated African culture. With Castle Lite partnering to highlight the vibrancy of African basketball and lifestyle, the event combined competition, laughter, and community. Nyuat aimed to showcase his talents and connect with fellow players, celebrities, and influencers who shared his passion for the game.

“I’m here to represent my sport and country,” Nyuat said. “The Lite Star Showdown is an opportunity to show what African basketball is all about – the intensity on the court and the laid-back joy we share off it. I’m ready to have fun and meet amazing people.”

As the young centre participated in the Showdown, he carried with him the hopes and dreams of a continent, the rhythm of a game that transcended sport, and the belief that basketball could unite, inspire, and elevate a new generation of African talent. Through events like the Lite Star Showdown, basketball in Africa continues to evolve, proving to be a sport and a vibrant cultural movement celebrating excellence, connection, and community.
