In South Africa, the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA Cyclethon, proudly hosted by Bidfood and powered by Virgin Active, took place on September 15 at the bustling Melrose Arch. This annual event brought hundreds of people together to pedal to support children and teenagers battling cancer.

Childhood cancer is a significant cause of mortality in children globally, especially in areas with limited access to early detection and treatment. Early detection is crucial for improving survival rates.

For five hours, the Cyclethon transformed Melrose Arch into a hub of activity as participants cycled, danced, and moved in unison, showing unwavering support for children undergoing cancer treatment. The atmosphere was filled with energy and purpose, as each pedal stroke symbolised a step towards better care and brighter futures. With 150 riders taking turns each hour, the event demonstrated a powerful sense of community, with everyone united by the goal of positively impacting the lives of young cancer patients across the country.

But this wasn’t just about breaking a sweat. The event was a lifeline for many families. CHOC’s programmes provide essential care in Paediatric Oncology Units nationwide, offering patients and their families a ‘home away from home’ and much-needed assistance with transport, psychological support, and nutrition. Every pedal, big or small, made a significant impact.

CHOC CEO Hedley Lewis captured the day’s spirit perfectly. “Today is about using opportunities like this at Melrose Arch to say, ‘We are there for children going through cancer treatments.’
“We’re standing by the families, no matter how stressful and hard their journey is. With every pedal, we are creating hope. This is about ensuring that South Africa’s rainbow nation stands united, showing we see, hear, and feel them. Every little pedal counts.”

The atmosphere at the event was one of determination and joy, with participants such as Michelle Perl Lustig sharing their reasons for participating. “I’ll be cycling for two hours because I believe this is a great initiative,” she said, joining hundreds of others in a show of support for children who need it most.

With the support of organisations like Bidfood and the long-standing partnership with Melrose Arch, CHOC continues to raise the voices of those facing childhood cancer. This event was not just about cycling but about standing alongside families, offering them strength and showing that every effort, no matter how small, can bring hope to the lives of young cancer patients.
