Norwood Police Station officers nab copper cable thieves

Officers from Norwood Police Station retrieved 12 copper cables in Waverly when a suspicious taxi was reported.

Four suspects were brought to book while two are still at large for copper cable theft.

According to the Norwood Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, “on Athol Street in Waverly on September 9, at 03:00, the Norwood police arrested four suspects, but two are still at large.”

He added that police were called after a suspicious taxi was seen in Waverly. On arrival, the police officers asked for permission to search the occupants and the taxi, when two suspects ended up running away.

Police blocked four occupants to prevent them from fleeing the scene.

“A search was conducted where 12 pieces of copper pipe cables were found in the taxi. Suspects revealed to the police that they stole the cables in Waverly.”

Masotsha added that the suspects were arrested for possession of stolen copper cables and were transported to Norwood Police Station.

The taxi, which was used in the commission of the crime, was taken to the SAPS compound in Aeroton.

The Norwood SAPS management and its members appreciate the good working relationship in the fight against crime with the local security companies, who assisted in the apprehension of the suspects.

The four suspects will appear before the court of law in due course.
