St Vincent School for the Deaf excels in the South African Mathematics Olympiad

St. Vincent School learners reached the provincial level against all the schools that participated in the South African Mathematics Olympiad.

The maths department at St Vincent School for the Deaf encouraged their learners to improve their results by being more involved and active in national educational competitions from August to September 16.

In the first quarter of the year, Grade 8-12 learners were invited to partake in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) sponsored by Old Mutual and this competition sparked great interest in both the learners and teachers.

The St Vincent School intermediate and senior phase learners participated through an online app called, Siyavula. The platform is a zero-rated app for maths and science and the website has set questionnaires to be answered by the learners to build a solid foundation.

Between the different competition levels, the learners achieved the provincial level against all the schools that participated.

These learners went through from cluster level to district level and finally to provincial. Two St Vincent School learners in Grade 6 achieved good results: Vhulenda Tshikalange landed second place, followed by Ngozichukwu Onuwa who scored fourth place in category D.

Botselo Maso in Grade 9 also achieved third place in the province.

The maths head of the department, Khanyisa Mxokozeli said, “We would like to show our gratitude to the teachers involved and GDE for their great support in encouraging and preparing our learners for this competition.”
