DP World Lions women cricketer is elated about her leadership role

DP World Lions women cricket captain, Kgomotso Rapoo won player of the tournament during mini cricket days.

Newly appointed DP World Lions women’s cricket captain, Kgomotso Rapoo said she was grateful and humbled by her new leadership role.

Rapoo added going through the sport’s group stages, she was always seen as a leader but it never crossed her mind that one day she would lead the DP World Lions team.

She noted that her responsibilities as a captain included focusing on ‘we’ and not ‘I’, as well as making sure the team was happy, performing and winning.

“I had a vision of leading the team but never thought it would happen at the age of 21. Seeing people around me happy about my captain appointment makes it seem like it was meant to happen.”

The 21-year-old said she began playing cricket at the age of eight and took it seriously at age 10.

DP World Lions women’s player Kgomotso Rapoo plays in the Women’s Provincial T20 Cup.

She was unaware of her talent in the sport until she was selected to play mini-cricket and walked away as the player of the tournament.

Rapoo said performing was never a concern for her because she always remembered that she was playing a team sport and not an individual sport.

“When bad days occur, I prefer cheering for my teammates and being funny because that helps me forget what I did wrong. I expect a lot from myself through my performances but my teammates always find a way to remind me of something positive, which keeps me going.”

The captain concluded that growing up, people from her community would ask her ‘Why cricket – it’s a men’s sport?’. I think that saying challenged me because I always thought I was not good enough and learnt that if I am not challenged in any way then I will not grow.”
