Johannesburg Water confirmed that a dug-up hole on the corner of Buckingham and Grosvenor avenues in Craighall Park was fixed on October 4.
A resident had alerted the Gazette on September 29 about a deep hole with an exposed metal pipe, which posed a danger to not only motorists who had to avoid the hole by driving into oncoming traffic, but also to pedestrians.

The water utility’s spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said, “The Johannesburg Water team was aware of the hole. There was a leaking valve and it was repaired yesterday.”
Ward 90 councillor, Martin Williams noted that it was not the first time there was a leak on that corner.
“There is a Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Johannesburg Water, and Egoli gas network involved in the leaks and I have asked the involved parties to redesign the entire structure since 2016 when I became councillor but nothing has been done, instead the leaks get worse.”

Williams added there was a big pipe which was JRA’s responsibility and the small pipe was Johannesburg Water’s responsibility.
