Events to keep you busy during Heritage Month in Rosebank

Don't have anywhere to go to in the next few days? Well, we have something for you to look forward to around Rosebank and Killarney.

Heritage Month is celebrated annually in September. It is celebrated to mark our nation’s diverse culture and heritage.

Government calls on all South Africans to use Heritage Month to foster greater social cohesion, nation building and a shared national identity. The celebration of Heritage Month has created a conducive environment for all people to embrace and celebrate what was inherited or bequeathed to us by our forebears.

Locals are encouraged to visit the following places during this month.

The Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre is a place of memory, education and lessons for humanity. The centre explores the history of genocide in the 20th century with a focus on the case studies of the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and honours the memory of the victims. It examines the connections between genocide and contemporary human rights issues, urging visitors to understand the consequences of prejudice, discrimination and othering, to prevent the recurrence of mass atrocities and genocide in all its forms.
The centre was founded in 2008 and officially opened to the public in March 2019 as a public-private partnership with the City of Johannesburg. Together with its sister Centres in Cape Town and Durban, it forms part of the South African Holocaust and Genocide Foundation.

Sanctuary Mandela is not only built on the site of Nelson Mandela’s former Houghton residence, it also features elements from the original home. That means it’s infused with history. Madiba and members of his family lived at the Houghton residence between 1992 and 1998 (after which it became the headquarters of the Nelson Mandela Foundation until 2002). He was based there while negotiating the multi-party talks that led to South Africa’s democratic rebirth, South Africa’s famous 1995 Rugby World Cup win, the first elections, and his presidency.

The South African National War Museum was officially opened on August 29, 1947 by former Prime Minister of South Africa, Field Marshal JC Smuts PC, CM, OM, DTD, KC. During the First World War (1914–1918) no formal showcase was made of South Africa’s involvement in that war. In 1940, Captain J. Agar-Hamilton was appointed official historian of the Union Defence Forces. The formation of a Historical Research Committee that same year was to ensure the preservation of documents and military memorabilia and lay the foundation for the establishment of a museum.

Johannesburg Heritage Foundation was born out of the fight against two decades of ruthless destruction, starting in 1960, that destroyed hundreds of homes in Parktown.
The Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust was formed in 1985 to rally support for the heritage of the area, and to combat public indifference by making heritage houses more accessible. The trust officially changed its name to the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation in 2012, to reflect the fact that its work in support of heritage extended well beyond the boundaries of Parktown and Westcliff.
