ORT SA CEO gives insight on artificial intelligence

ORT SA CEO in Houghton highlighted the pros and cons of artificial intelligence at the Limmud Johannesburg session.

The CEO of ORT SA in Houghton took part in a panel discussion during the Limmud Talk Johannesburg session at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways.
Ariellah Rosenberg participated in the panel discussion titled Artificial Intelligence ‘(AI) from A to Z’ on August 27. Focusing on the transformative role that AI can play in education, Rosenberg’s talk encompassed both the immense opportunities AI can bring to education and pertinent concerns.

In a world where technology seems to be revolutionising every sector, there’s a question that echoes with almost everyone: ‘Will teachers become obsolete?’ To this, Rosenberg’s stance was that while AI will significantly reshape the educational landscape, the essence and indispensability of human teachers will remain vital more than ever.

Rosenberg believes that AI should be looked at as an ally rather than a replacement. For example, AI can give educators the one asset they need more of – time. By automating administrative tasks and offering customised learning pathways for learners, teachers can reclaim hours. This invaluable time can be redirected towards fostering discussions, promoting collaborative projects, and deepening interpersonal connections within the classroom. It is within these interactions that true education thrives, and no algorithm can replace the empathy, understanding, and personal touch of a human educator.

However, the journey with AI isn’t without its roadblocks. Rosenberg highlighted the concern of a growing disparity between the privileged and the less fortunate in the education sector. As AI and ed-tech tools become mainstream, there’s a danger of deepening the divide if resources aren’t equitably distributed. Furthermore, with digital tools collecting vast amounts of learner data, the issue of data privacy emerges too.

The need to establish forums for teachers to gain knowledge and share best practices is crucial. ORT SA, an educational non-governmental organisation dedicated to uplifting teaching and learning across various communities, will be creating a special task force to address this need.
