Former colleagues and coaches at KES share about Springbok player

Springbok hooker who hails from King Edward VII School receives compliments and well wishes from former colleagues and coaches.

Malcolm Justin Marx who plays hooker in the national rugby union team is currently with the rest of the Springboks for the Rugby World Cup. The Gazette spoke to his former school, King Edward VII School (KES) rugby coaches to get to know a little about him and convey their well wishes.

Current head coach of The Reds Rugby team at KES Marco Engelbrecht said it was a massive privilege to walk a small journey with Marx during his time at King Edward.

He said he was privileged enough to play with Marx in grades 10 and 11 in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

“He was an integral part of our successful rugby team so it was special playing with him. It was just something special for us to experience his humility and the way he served King Edward. He has been a true leader and inspiration to us, especially by coming back this year and last year and presenting boys with red jerseys as a sign of wishing them luck for the weekend’s games,” said Engelbrecht.

He added that this was something they truly appreciated of him and the fact that he was always willing to inspire the next generation of future King Edward leaders. “So just from our side, all the best at the World Cup mate; you’ve been superb not just in rugby but you are also an awesome human being and we trust that you and your family and your little girl enjoy France and bring us back the trophy champ!”

Sheldon De Robillard who is currently the forwards coach of First XV at KES said it was an honour and a privilege to be at the school at the same time as Marx. He said something that always stuck out was his humility and how he is always respectful of people, even younger than himself, which was rare in those days.

“Something that maybe stands out for me is coming into my Grade 11 year. I was privileged to play the season with him in 2012. We had a defensive drill and he could see I wasn’t making my hit so after practice he took me aside, helped me with a few tips and just got me used to that physicality side of things.”

De Robillard said Marx always wanted to make those around him better and he just did it in the most humble way possible. “You could see he was always destined for good things and we are just happy to see him doing well. All the best for this next campaign and we will be watching every minute that you play champion. Good luck!”
