“We’ve been in pre-season for a couple of weeks or months already. The guys are putting in pretty good effort at the moment. Good turnout so far. We start the first game on September 24, we don’t have the venue yet. The guys have really good energy compared to previous years as we see a lot more guys rocking up to training, putting in a lot more effort so overall we’re excited,” said Benjamin Patton.

Patton said their top two teams are in Premier A and President’s A which is very good for Pirates Cricket. This comes five years after Pirates cricket’s last appearance in Premier A. Patton said, “I am new, and this is my second full season, but we built a good culture with the guys working together and pulling in the right direction which is fantastic.”

Vice-captain of the first team, Nicholas Liedtke, has been at Pirates for about seven years now. “I originally joined the team when we were in the Premier A league; we soon after got relegated to Premier B League,” said Liedtke. The team trains at Pirates Club in Greenside on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

He said his role involves playing a support role to the captain. “We brainstorm together, we select the teams beforehand, we allocate roles to individuals in the team, we try to uplift the players in the team, and we share the responsibility. We must have individuals that can speak to a variety of members in the team for the betterment of the team.”

Liedtke said they are currently busy with their pre-season training which means they come down early before the season starts and just get together and work on some skills. Because there has been quite a break, they just need to get to know the guys again, get to enjoy the camaraderie and build team spirit. The vice-captain said they are currently also prepping for a couple of pre-season games which will take another team to the league.

Liedtke said the team is even more excited to have the highly experienced Aya Myoli as the new coach.
