Parktown Girls High School for Girls makes a difference through blood donations

The NGO needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days for each blood group to ensure sustained availability for patients in need.

Parktown High School for Girls learners donated blood to the South African National Blood Service on August 11.

Blood donation ambassador and learner, Bokang Makutoane said, “My role as peer promoter is to ensure that learners who are donating blood are comfortable and healthy. My job is to also encourage first-time donators that their donations will make a difference and save lives. I became an ambassador by volunteering and I was a frequent donator which made things easier.”

Donor relations practitioner Katrina Makamo from the blood service said the NGO’s goal was to collect 37 units of blood from the high school but ended up collecting 43 units.

A frequent donor, Amira Du Plessis said the experience was seamless. “I am always encouraged to donate blood because it is quite interesting to know that one bag can save three lives,” she said.

The blood service continues to urge people who are eligible to donate, to spare 30 minutes of their time to give the gift of life and help stabilise blood stock levels by visiting their nearest sites or mobile drives. The NGO needs to maintain a blood stock of five days for each blood group to ensure sustained availability for patients in need.

Another donor, Isabelle Roberts said she began donating blood because she was encouraged to.
