Norwood author aims to inspire

A young author based in Norwood has not only published two books within two years but is currently working on two more books.

In the space of two years, a young woman based in Norwood has published two books.

Pontsho Shanon, who writes under the name Poni the Scribbler, has from a young age written down her thoughts. She said this was an escape route when feeling down or depressed.

“I wrote a lot during 2021, and in 2022 when I looked at my laptop, I realised I had over 100 pages of writing out my thoughts. Then I took it to a publisher who loved it and said it would work if edited properly,” said Poni.

She said the publisher broke down the content into chapters with titles and they proceeded to publish the first book, Diary of a goddess in 2022.

“I decided to pursue this without money in mind. I was inspired by the first book to write further. The first book is creative writing. My second book, She chased the moon and forgot her crown, is about a village girl who grew up thinking life is perfect and when she became a teenager, she realised that life is not as perfect as she thought it was.

“She was forced into a marriage and started being resentful and angry as she realised this was not the life she wanted. It has life lessons such as learning to be content.”

Poni said she was currently working on part two of the book.

The author is a nurse by profession who writes part-time. She also writes articles online and is part of an international writing platform.

The other book Poni is working on is about her nursing experience, addressing stereotypes about nurses and a nurse’s perspective of the job.

Poni said her family was very supportive and they attended her book launch in Centurion. The young woman considers herself a mother to her extended family’s children and said she incorporated her nursing qualities of being approachable and reliable when with her family.

Poni reads books by Venda authors Takalani M, Cindy Trimm, Elizabeth Gilbert and Chimamanda Ngozi whose books she views as authentic.

“What I want people to take away from this is that you must do what you love, pursue your dreams and use the spare time you have to fulfil what you love doing.”

Books by Poni the Scribbler are available on all online book platforms – Amazon, Takealot etc.
