Old Eds athletes bring several medals from Comrades Marathon

Several accolades were awarded the Old Edwardian athletes who participated in the Comrades Marathon this year.

There were 22 starters, including seven women, from Old Edwardians Athletics Club in Houghton in this year’s Comrades marathon down-run. Old Eds athletics member and comrades green number holder Meryl Rahme, shared that all finished the race on June 11 from Maritzburg to Durban successfully including two novices. Green numbers for completing 10 comrades were awarded to James Haydock and Michael Kelly.

Runners’ supporter and parent Shirley Rahme made the poem Ode to runners below:

Ode to runners
Early on a winter’s morn
Their paraphernalia they adorn
They hit the road, just half awake
Step by step until they wake
Suddenly the sun comes out
All the runners give a shout
Like a kettle spurting steam
They hit the road to the extreme
Now they’re really in a race
No one thinks to lower the pace
All are well in for the ride
I watch with trepidation and pride!
