Upper Houghton is not impressed with Johannesburg Water’s stalling techniques

Upper Houghton resident, Cynthia Geffen has been contacting the Johannesburg Water call center from last year with no response.

Upper Houghton resident Cynthia Geffen’s plea for exposed and leaking stormwater drains to be attended to on St David Road continues to fall on deaf ears.

The Gazette published a story on June 6 about Geffen’s struggle in getting the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Johannesburg Water to repair and replace missing stormwater covers.

The JRA did its part on Ash Road and replaced a cement cover on a stormwater drain.

Geffen said since the Gazette enquired with Johannesburg Water in May about two leaking underground water meters, the water utility was on site on 21 June. “However, I am not sure if they are fixed because it’s still early to see if they are still leaking. The one on the sidewalk next to the road is still open without a cover and is quite deep which presents a hazard,” she said.

She added that the two stormwater drains remained open which continued to pose a danger to King Edward School and St John’s College learners who walk on this road after their sports extramural activities.

Johannesburg Water external communications officer Nolwazi Dhlamini confirmed that Johannesburg Water was on site last week.

“The foreman met with the customer at 7 Ash Street, Houghton on June 21 and showed the team all her concerns which was the underground fire hydrant that was not properly closed. This has since been closed by Johannesburg Water teams, and the cover of the fire hydrant has been replaced.”
