Craighall para-athlete to raise funds by cycling to Cape Town

Para-athlete Sean Clarke injured his leg at seven years old by jumping off a roof which resulted in him tearing arteries.

Para-athlete Sean Clarke is determined to cycle to Cape Town and swim to Robben Island to raise R200 000 for a prosthetic leg beneficiary.

The Craighall Park resident said even though his adventurous habits as a seven-year-old resulted in his disability, it had opened new doors for him.

“I jumped off a roof at home and kicked my leg through the glass window which resulted in a shattered knee and burst arteries which left my leg with no sensory ability. Doctors recommended that I take up swimming and was classified as a disabled athlete in the sport and made the KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and national disabled swimming team.”

Clarke added that despite being classified as disabled, it had not hindered his determined spirit and passion for sports.

“In 2016, I told my surgeon about my plans of completing a 21km race which I did and also completed a 42.2 km race which involved a lot of training. The preparation for the races was strenuous because I had to wear a moon boot every day for my foot to recover from the training but I was determined to finish the race because it has always been a lifelong dream of mine.
“I am aiming to cycle to Cape Town and swim to Robben Island and Big Bay in October as a way to not only raise awareness about disabilities but to also raise funds through BackaBuddy for James Willers who, due to neglect and severe burns, lost his right leg and requires a prosthetic leg.”

The 28-year-old added he had raised about R21 000 through BackaBuddy which is an online crowdfunding platform.
