Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku stresses the importance of getting Joc approval before hosting events

The City Joint Operations Committee (Joc) assess and approve events including entities such as: EMS, Traffic Management, Environmental Health and JMPD.

Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku stressed the importance of seeking approval from the Joint Operations Committee (Joc) before hosting events in the ward.

Echeozonjoku said, “I have noted with concern that there are street parties, clubs with DJs, public gatherings, and noise pollution, followed by illegal dumping after events. In some instances, marquees are put up in the streets blocking streets without Joc approval in our ward.”

The councillor explained that the City of Joburg had an approval process for all events taking place across the city. To be approved, the applicants needed to adhere to certain requirements. Joc assessed and approved events together with EMS, Traffic Management, and JMPD.

She added not seeking approval would not be tolerated as it caused disturbance for other residents. “Who sometimes gets stuck in traffic due to marquees erected on the streets? It is also a danger to those who attend as someone could get hurt while consuming alcohol at unauthorised events without necessary precautionary measures taken.”

Echeozonjoku urged residents to report any events that blocked roads, added to noise pollution, and if residents couldn’t confirm that the event had the approval of JMPD
