Triathlete James Gerber raised funds for one King Edward VII School learner

Triathlete James Gerber hopes to change more learner's lives through cycling crowd funding initiatives.

Triathlete James Gerber cycled for change and raised R260 000 on April 8 for a King Edward VII School (KES) learner Risima Mgiba.

Gerber explained his relationship with MatchKit and crowdfunding.

“I remember the day I met Mike Sharman who is the same person who suggested I start a crowdfunding campaign. My goal from there was to change the life of one child at a time by sponsoring his or her schooling through the Tag foundation.”

Matchkit is an online platform committed to making athletes financially fit with a variety of online tools, all accessible in one focused professional platform.

He noted that he and his partner started riding at 05:20 while their spirits were high.

“My total riding time was 14:05:00 and Dylan did it in 15:00:00. R260 000 was raised over the course of the weekend taking my campaign to over R 800 000 in nine months.”

Gerber added that he had no doubt that Risima will grab this opportunity with both hands and make himself proud in the process.

The KES learner said he never thought he would attend a top-10 school due to his financial situation.

“My thoughts about this astonishing campaign is that it is a very unique and smart way to raise money for my future and for that I’m really thankful. I would like to advise the next learner who will be in my position that: If you are given an opportunity to change your life don’t think twice, take it and excel at it.”

The triathlete’s plans moving forward include becoming a pro triathlete in 2024 and doing it full-time while juggling his Tag Foundation responsibilities.
