Curious Youth Group keeps youth out of the street

Youth workshop in Paterson Park Library

Non-profit organisation, Curious Youth Group (CYG) based in Norwood works to help young people avoid the pitfalls and bad influences they are faced with everyday.

Ouma Khasu founded the organisation in June 2006 and her objective was to take boys off the street because of the bad culture of drinking and partying during the time. Khasu explained that children and teenagers were developing habits that were frowned upon and took it upon herself to do something about it.

The purpose of the organisation is to promote awareness, educate and empower the youth. “We are trying to steer the youth in the direction of building a better future and not neglecting the issues that they will face if they don’t start now. We are trying to help equip them where ever possible in order to help them safeguard themselves and their future,” said Khasu.

The journey is amazing. There is growth, we have help and support from Women Developing Others (WDO) and we are just looking for sponsors and donations to help push our initiatives,” said Khasu. They are currently working on projects which focus on building skills that will be useful for the youth since they are in the midst of 4IR. They are planning workshops with the help of the community libraries which will help the youth to develop skills.

Sophie Kowa, the chairperson of CYG mentioned that there is an upcoming event at the Paterson Park Library where they will be implementing the workshop plan on June 16. Creating a solution regarding the youth unemployment crisis and finding a way to create jobs for the youth is one of the goals the foundation. The challenges they are facing are working on a zero budget when they are trying to carry out the programmes and finding sponsorships and donations.
