Class of 2022 matric shares advice on how to pass matric

Jessica Lansdown is grateful to have attended St. Mary’s School Waverley, as it provided her with many opportunities for development and growth.

Lansdown, who passed with nine distinctions, says she was fortunate enough to have had outstanding teachers who invested a great deal of time, interest, expertise, and effort into her learning and education.

“I realised it was important to make use of all the opportunities my teachers presented to me, such as writing practice essays for my teacher to mark or even just making sure I was absorbing all the knowledge they had to offer in class.”

She highlights her matriculating experience and hopes that the 2023 grade 12 class can follow in her footsteps and achieve nine distinctions or more.

Lansdown states that time management is vital in matric, and from the beginning of the year, it is important not to fall behind in assignments and homework.

Another learner from Greenside High School shared the same opinion about studying hard in your matric year.

Muhammed Siraj Loonat said, “Do not procrastinate. Start studying as early as you can because you need all the time you can get.”

He also emphasises the importance of not overburdening oneself and overstudying, but rather studying smartly and paying attention to all of one’s classes.

Loyiso Mahlangu of St Mary’s School Waverley said, “A study timetable works for other people, and some do not, knowing exactly what you want to do pushes you to study hard and understand.”

She highlights that getting a good night’s rest the day before each exam helps one to retain a lot of the information one studied, so it is easier to recall it when needed.

“Distractions are always available but learning how to discipline yourself and reminding yourself of your goals, is what will keep you in check.”

Nabeel Petkar of Greenside High School states that one has to set their mind first, at the beginning of the year on what one wants and what exactly you going to get.

“During the year you have to accomplish your goals in terms of assessments, prelim exams, and major exams, which will boost your confidence, but it shouldn’t let you be too proud of your results because you will have to improve on that to pass your final exams.”

He adds that one has to remove social media, cut time off your phone, be on WhatsApp groups that are about school, and study hard and smart.
