Bongmusa Mthembu to go Over the Mountain with Pirates Road Running Club

Local runners in Greenside who would like to join the field can enter at entrytickets.net and the first 2000 participants will receive free t-shirts and goodie bags.

Anyone who has ever done the Pirates 21K race route that takes one over Northcliff Hill will tell you that its nickname of “Joburg’s Toughest 21” is true.

According to Bryan Richards, race director of the Pirates 21K race, the forty-fifth famous race powered by Medshield will be held on February 19 and is a highlight on the running calendar for runners and their bucket lists.

“This year’s comrades’ winner, Bongmusa Mthembu, is scheduled to go “Over the Mountain,” as Pirates affectionately refer to this route, to see if he can break Mabuthile Lebopo’s magical record of 01:07:13, set way back in 2003.”

Richards explains that Mthembu has previously won the race, and they are excited to see more elite runners join this historic race and put strength and speed to the test on a tougher-than-normal course.

“It is a notch in anyone’s belt to say that they have finished this course, and an even greater achievement if they have done it in a good time.”

He highlights that the run will start in Greenside and wind its way up to Linden through Northcliff, then back to Pirates Club and that the route includes the famous hill sections such as K1, K2, and the King and Queen of the Mountain section.

Richards concludes by saying that the famous section at the top of Northcliff is a great photo opportunity and that for both the first male and female runners to cross the finish line each winner will receive R1500.

Details: People are encouraged to note that all runners who complete the course will get a
finishers medal.
