In a statement shared by Eric Itzkin, head of Heritage at the City of Johannesburg, Beyers Naudé lived in Greenside for more than 20 years during a time of heightened activism and political upheaval in South Africa.

“The site is strongly associated with the leading clergyman and anti-apartheid activist Beyers Naudé, when he was deeply involved in the liberation struggle, and while facing house arrest and other restrictions imposed by the apartheid government.”

Families, Scouts, residents’ associations, non-profit organisations, and other groups came wearing hats, and gloves and others even wore gumboots. In the afternoon, entertainment and activities were provided at Delta Park and along the Braamfontein Spruit clean-ups because most of the work was done in the morning before the day became too hot.

Number 3: Lions cricket CEO encourages people to have a Mandela Day daily

Lions cricket CEO encourages people to have a Mandela Day daily

Imperial Wanderers Stadium hosted the public and corporates throughout the day to celebrate Mandela Day. CEO of Lions Cricket Jono Leaf-Wright said Mandela Day was all about unity and having a common goal to give back.

“We have an excess of 450 people here packing over 5 000 food parcels to give back to various communities around the province. What this day signifies is what’s possible in this country when we all unite with a common vision, when we all work together and hold hands for a common cause. It’s a special day of celebration and today also shows that sport and people have the power to change the world.”
