Wanderers Club rugby player aims for the stars

Vainah Ubisi said she has always looked up to Eben Etzebeth, especially because they play in the same position.

Wanderers Rugby Club player Vainah Ubisi hopes to sign with South Africa’s women’s senior team.

The 19-year-old said she began playing rugby in 2012 at Mokgoba Primary School.

“I only played for two years because it was cancelled. We didn’t have coaches until 2016 when I went to Seshego High School where I joined a team. From 2018 to 2019, I played for Limpopo Blue Bulls until 2020 due to the outbreak of the pandemic, and being in my last year of high school.”

The rugby player added after passing her matric year, she took a gap year in 2021.

Ubisi said although she enrolled at the Tshwane University of Technology last year, she played for the Wanderers Club. She added she went for trials at the Golden Lions and was selected for the U20 team.

“I later got selected for U20 junior Springboks. I have always wanted to be in a green and gold jersey so I was so happy and even cried tears of joy.”
